Look and act professional

When playing at a function there is nothing worse than getting it wrong. Believe me I know, been there, done it, got the T-shirt as they say! Taking the wrong turning and leading the top table out the fire exit will not only cause consternation among the guests, it is sure to make you look a fool.

Find out as much information as you can in advance and make sure you know:-

  • The correct date, venue and time.
  • Exactly what is required of you.
  • What your own requirements are.

When you arrive at the venue introduce yourself to the organiser and confirm any further arrangements you should know about. For example:-

Will you be static.
Is where you will be standing suitable.
Will you be marching.
Is the route you will take suitable. Is there enough room. Remember that when chairs are pulled back and guests stand up, the space you thought was available is no longer there.
The VIP's. (Top table).
Make them aware of your plan. The first person behind you is the most important. If he / she follows you blindly (as happens) you will have to think quickly to get them to where they should be.
Check door heights
Will you need to duck down to get through? Always have someone hold doors open for you.
Tuning up
Make sure that you are provided with acceptable facilities for your needs.
Do not make yourself an uninvited guest at a function. Give a professional job and keep in the background until required. Stay away from the bar unless invited.
